How did I not know this about Jon Lester?

I am a big Jon Lester fan as every Red Sox fan should be.
I thought I was pretty Jon Lester savvy as well.

However, according to Baseball Reference, I found out that his middle name is Tyler.

How did I not know that he has the names Tyler and Lester?

If his first name was Willie, then it would have been perfect!

(Yes I know this is the third time I made a Willie Tyler and Lester joke on the blog... and I don't care.)

With one swing of the bat, so many things go wrong for the Red Sox

When I heard Paul Konerko hit his grand slam while driving this evening, my heart sank. I thought all emotion was over once my team got eliminated... but I guess not.

I really wanted Jon Lester to get 20 wins... Not going to happen.
I wanted Jon Lester to get Cy Young consideration... Not going to happen.
And I wanted the Red Sox to get to 90 wins.

Well after this sweep, there's a chance they won't even have the highest win total of a team with the word "Sox" in their name.

In comes the Yankees... the string being played out.
Man, the "what might have beens" just keep piling up.

I still think 20 wins is cool

Jon Lester goes for win #20 tonight and I really hope he gets it.
Of course I want ANY Red Sox pitcher to win and with the Sox still having a shot at 90 wins, I want them win as often as they can now.

But 20 for Jon Lester will be sweet.

I know we're not supposed to care about win totals anymore.
I had someone say they are a meaningless stat.

And while I wouldn't go as far as meaningless (Hello! You play to win the Game!) wins and losses on the record can be misleading.

As I wrote in my Bert Blyleven post, the fact that he didn't get the win in 13 additional games is keeping him out of the Hall of Fame is nothing short of insanity.

And in one of my MANY posts plugging Felix Hernandez for the Cy Young
, I pointed out that if the only stat that CC has over King Felix is wins, then that is not enough to give him the Cy Young.

So I understand that wins are not the end all and be all of a pitcher's worth.

But I still think 20 wins is cool.
It's a nice shorthand for an ace caliber pitcher.

"He's a 20 game winner" still carries a little weight. If you win enough to take your team 1/5 of the way to 100 wins yourself, it must feel good for a pitcher.

I can't imagine a pitcher being THAT lucky that they would get twenty wins and have it all be good fortune.

OK, maybe Rick Helling's 20 win season in 1998 for the Rangers despite an ERA of 4.41 was a bit lucky.

But hey, I once heard that when Napoleon was considering new generals, one of the questions he would ask is "Is he lucky?"

So perhaps a healthy amount of luck is cool.

Besides, I'd rather be a Mr. Magoo winning games by pure luck than a hard luck pitcher losing games despite pitching well.

It also is aesthetically pleasing.

Seeing 20 wins on the back of a baseball card just looks cool. I don't care how big a Sabrmatrician you are... it is like the spoiler on the back of the car. It may not mean much but it looks bad ass.

It's a nice title to have.
It's kind of like "Academy Award Winning Director" sounds cool in front of a director's name.

Did the Oscar make Martin Scorsese or the Coen Brothers better directors?

Of course not... they were geniuses long before they got the Golden Guys.

But knowing they won Oscars and can be called "Academy Award Winning Directors" is neat, if overdue.

And with Lester... well it could make his Cy Young case more compelling (or take away from Sabathia's case and maybe split the "You need the big win total" crowd and give Felix a real chance.)

It would be the latest peak that he scaled since cancer (that along with winning the World Series clincher in 2007 and throwing a no hitter in 2008.)

It would give the Red Sox a nice moment to build upon after a disappointing season.

And oh yeah, help create the winning foundation of the 2011 team.

It's good to start with an ace... and what builds more confidence in an ace than knowing they won a pile of games?

Maybe being a 20 game winner.

It may not mean as much as it used to... but it is still cool.

10 Reasons to watch this weekend's Red Sox/Yankees Series

When the 2010 schedule was published showing the season beginning and ending with Red Sox and Yankee series, it sure felt exciting, didn't it?

Perhaps there would be a great showdown for the AL East... maybe playoff positioning?

When the Red Sox were hovering around contention the 6 head to head meetings over the final 10 games sure looked inviting.

Now...
Flop.

The Red Sox are all but done... the tragic number is 4. They are playing out the string and getting ready to play golf this October.

The Yankees are cruising to another October appearance and trying to right their pitching staff while jockeying for position with the Rays and Twins.

So why should Red Sox fans even watch this series?
There are some reasons...

1. WIN THE SERIES AND THE RED SOX HOLD OFF ELIMINATION

Yeah elimination will be inevitable... but if it can be held off until Monday, then as a point of pride we can say "We weren't eliminated until the last week of the season."

With all the injuries on the team, that's a nice (if misleading) thing to say.

2. DELAY THE YANKEE CELEBRATION

It's clear by the way Joe Girardi is managing that he is simply trying to make the post season without worrying about the Division... sure he would LIKE to win the Division but he'd RATHER have a healthy pitching staff. So the Yankees clinching a playoff spot seems to be the goal.

They'll get there, but it doesn't have to be on OUR watch.

3. JON LESTER, COMPROMISE CY YOUNG CANDIDATE?

Can Jon Lester get to 20 wins? If he does will he be a Cy Young Candidate? (Sabathia's 20 wins seem to be his only qualification over Felix Hernandez but he is talked about as the front runner.)

If Lester gets 20, his name will be in the mix. He goes for win #19 on Saturday.

4. 90 WINS IS A GOOD GOAL FOR THIS TEAM

Seriously, with all the injuries and strife on this team to finish with 90 wins would be a real accomplishment.

They need to win 6 games out of their last 10 to pull that off. That would give Francona six 90 win seasons out of seven years in Boston. Not bad.

5. MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE WILL GET HURT

The Red Sox have had 19 guys on their disabled list.
Why not 20? Seriously... a nice round number is easier to remember. And that would be the legacy of the 2010 Red Sox... 20 dudes on the DL.

That would make 90 wins even MORE impressive.

6. IT WILL TAKE YOUR MIND OFF OF THE PATRIOTS/JETS LOSS

Perhaps seeing a New England team beat a New York team will take the sting out of it.

Yeah that is petty... but so are we!

7. YOU'LL GET TO SEE THE RED SOX SEE THE SUBTLE STEINBRENNER MEMORIAL

Then again they can probably see it from Fenway Park.

8. MAYBE THEY'LL SHOW SOME CLIPS OF THE 2004 ALCS

Those are always fun to see.

Granted they will also show clips of Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone etc... but those don't hurt as much since '04 and '07.

Plus it is always interesting to see how they can spin the rivalry since the whole Bambino thing is over.

9. NO MATTER WHAT THE STANDINGS ARE, IT IS ALWAYS FUN TO SEE THE YANKEES LOSE

It isn't nice to admit that, but it is true.

Admit it Sox fans... when you saw that the Yankees were getting killed last night, you checked in... hoping to see Joba and Vazquez get slapped around. Seeing the seed of doubt creep into Yankee land, especially on the dawn of the playoffs, is a beautiful thing. Why not see the Sox contribute to that?

10. YOU WILL SEE THE BEGINNING OF THE GREATEST END OF THE SEASON COLLAPSE IN YANKEE HISTORY AND THE RED SOX STORM INTO THE PLAYOFFS

Hey... how is that any less likely than the Red Sox coming back from a 3-0 series hole, trailing in the 9th facing Mariano Rivera?

I bet you thought we were dead then too!

The come back starts NOW!

So have fun, and remember Sox fans who make the trip, you will be in THEIR home. Play nicely.

Besides, Red Sox fans and Yankee fans should be friends.

So play ball! Go Sox and make us proud in what is left of this season.
(And let's hope Joba gets an appearance or two.)

THE RED SOX ARE STILL IN IT... AND THEY ARE GOING TO WIN IT!

I am writing it down now...
The Red Sox are winning the 2010 World Series.

Lester picked up win #18, the Sox bats woke up, Rivera blew another save and the Rays fell apart to the Angels.

The Sox picked up a game on both. And guess what? The Rays and Yankees are playing each other... so if they win tomorrow they will pick up a game on ONE of them.

They are 7 games back in the loss column with 13 games to play.

EASY!
They've practically clinched a playoff spot already!

It is IN THE BAG!

(I've been out in the sun a lot today.)

Well THAT wasn't so hard, was it Red Sox?

A nice, no doubt about it win (save for that inning where Robert Coello's major league debut left a lot to be desired) and Jon Lester matched his career high for wins.

Actually there was something a lot of fun about last night's win.
The youth.

Ryan Kalish, 22, hit a grand slam.
Josh Reddick and Yamaico Navarro are 23 and 22 respectively.

Lars Anderson, who seems like he has been a Sox prospect forever, finally made his big league debut. Lest we forget, he's only 22.

And Lester, the grizzled veteran, is 26.

I like this kind of line up. I like holes being filled with young kids who want to win in the Red Sox uniform instead of picking the bones of other organizations.

Let's have more wins like this shall we? And go into 2011 with a lot of questions answered with the response "We can fix that within the organization."

I'm pumped for Red Sox and Rays! Oh who am I kidding...

For God's sake, the Red Sox are in third place. Not just for the Division but in the Wild Card hunt. The White Sox leap frogged the Red Sox this weekend.

My team is 8 games back in the loss column on Labor Day. And last time I checked, the Rays aren't the Padres and won't be dropping 10 games any time soon.

It's time to play for pride and count down our TRAGIC number.

So in honor of Fred Lynn, the Red Sox tragic number is 19.

Any combination of Red Sox losses and Rays wins that equal 19 will put this season out of its misery.

(Which means a sweep by the Rays will make the number 13!)

Then again a Red Sox sweep will put the Sox 5 games back in the loss column with 23 to play.

That's it. I AM pumped for this series!

Let's go Lester! Go for win #16!

A little thing called pride showed up in Baltimore

The Red Sox are not going to win anything this year... and as September begins it is clear that 2010 is a transition season.

But are they REALLY going to lose a series to the Orioles?

When they were down 4-1 and 5-2 after 2 innings with Jon Lester on the hill, it really looked like they were going to.

It looked like the team was just going to fold like Robert Shaw SHOULD have on the train in The Sting.

Then suddenly they exploded for 6 in the 7th... somehow Lester got a win out of the night.

Hey, the Sox might get eliminated soon enough (especially with the Yankees and Rays winning tonight) but there's no reason it has to be humiliating.

And until that night of elimination, I will update the tally.

July 21 - 6-4 loss in Oakland. (Buchholz can't hold on to an early lead as the Sox lose the series.)
July 24 - 5-1 loss in Seattle. (Lester's perfect game is foiled and the Red Sox bats die.)
July 25 - 4-2 loss in Seattle. (Okajima misplays a sacrifice bunt and the Mariners rally in the 8th to win.)
July 30 - 6-5 loss to Detroit. (Papi's grand slam makes it a 1 run game in the 9th but Cameron strikes out looking with the winning runs on base.)
August 2 - 6-5 loss to Cleveland. (Beltre drives in 5 runs by himself but the Red Sox leave the tying run on base with Big Papi on deck.)

August 31 - 5-2 loss in Baltimore. (Beckett pitches well but 2 8th inning homers sink the Sox.)

Dice-K goes tomorrow. At least get a series win out of it.
If the Rays and Yankees make the playoffs, make THEM earn it!

ACED

It was a matchup of two Cy Young contenders... and the Red Sox desperate to climb back into the land of relevance.

And as I wrote before, tonight was a must win for the Red Sox... and they did.

They won with power, Lester shutting them down and Papelbon striking out the side. (Don't tell me you didn't have images of Dan Johnson's 2008 homer off of Papelbon dancing in your head when he came up.)

And Lester out duels Price.

Suddenly the Sox aren't dead.
I'm not saying they are in striking distance yet... but it is suddenly getting interesting.

Let's update the tally.

Alright Red Sox... you are either in or you are out... right now

They need to win tonight.

It is the definition of a must win. Lester on the hill coming off a grotesque outing.

Going into Tampa to face David Price and the Rays.

If this season is going to amount to anything, they have to win this series.

I mean a sweep would be awesome, but 2 out of 3 is essential and our nominal ace is going tonight.

A sweep would put the Sox 2 1/2 back, 3 in the loss column of a playoff spot with a month to go.

Winning the series would put the Sox 5 games back in the loss column.

Losing the series would mean the Sox would be 7 games back in the loss column.

A Rays sweep would make it a 9 game gap in the loss column and time to shut down the veterans.

Win tonight and I'll get excited.

If not, the year might be done.

No pressure.

I don't often quote Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald... but THIS IS IT.

EVERYONE wants the NL Cy Young, but NOBODY wants the AL Cy Young

While the National League Cy Young race has been fascinating all year by the number of legit candidates (Roy Halladay, Adam Wainwright, Ubaldo Jimenez, Tim Hudson and with a great September Johan Santana could all win it), the AL race has been kind of lackluster...

It's been a rough few day for the AL Front Runners.
Last night Jon Lester got bombarded.

Tonight David Price was subpar in his game against Oakland.

And don't look now, but the unstoppable Cliff Lee has been ordinary of late in Texas.
He is 2-4 as a Ranger and with tonight's 8 runs in 5 2/3 innings loss, his Texas ERA is up to 4.18. Hardly the numbers of a difference making ace!

The other day I offered up King Felix Hernandez as a potential Cy Young Candidate.
If the front runners keep pitching like this, he won't need my support.

Clay Buchholz and CC Sabathia might emerge as the front runners before long.

The greatest for me would be to see Carl Pavano come all the way back and win it. Then the Yankees would HAVE to make an offer to him.

Why not?
Who else is running away with it?

Well THAT couldn't have helped Jon Lester's Cy Young bid!

Wow... 5 runs on the board before the Red Sox even took a swing?
9 runs in two innings?

His ERA jumping from 2.80 to 3.26?

Now THAT is how you end a good run of games.
I must say, my theory is correct about losses. It's better to lose by a lot and by a lot early. This game was over in the first inning, so I didn't spend the night fretting over the Sox.

There were no teeth ground tonight.

It's better to lose like this where you can shrug and say "Well, we didn't have it today" as opposed to blowing a lead late or dropping a 1-0 game.

Our ace got his ass handed to him. Go get them tomorrow.

Then again, there will be no sweep of Toronto and this team needs to sweep a few series to make this season remotely competitive (which is looking more and more like it won't be.)

Ah just win tomorrow, Dice-K. You know you won't have the worst start of any Sox pitcher this week. Just go three innings and give up 8 or fewer runs.
